Calling researchers from the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets “arctic scientists” would be fine in many cases.
After all, a large part of their mission involves studying changes in Greenland, and most of Greenland lies within the Arctic Circle.
In this case, though, the researchers were in Antarctica.
The prefix ant- means opposite, so Antarctica (the South Pole) is the opposite of the Arctic (the North Pole).
Back to our headline: We said that arctic scientists (North Pole) were heading home from Antarctica (South Pole).
Might I suggest we invest in a compass?
