For sale: Something new and cheap, but don’t ask what it is

Classified ads no explanation of product

It’s easy to get so caught up in the minutiae of writing and editing that you miss something that should have slapped you in the face.

Spelling? Check.

Grammar? Check.

Style? Check.

Capitalization, usage and punctuation? Check, check and check.

What’s the point of the article? Um …

In the case of this classified ad, I know I can buy something nearly new for less than half of the original price. It comes with the directions and the warranty, and I know whom to call.

But what’s for sale?

Oops.

So by all means, scrutinize every detail. Map every twist and turn of your route. Double-check every road sign along the way. Steer clear of construction, potholes and bad weather.

But whatever you do, don’t try to drive without a steering wheel.
